Ahoy, navy gin cocktail

On the south side of Austin, Texas, the folks at Genius Distiller ferment sugar and from it distill two styles of gin. One is a 114-proof “Navy Strength.” The higher alcohol level in this gin pushes the aromas of juniper and other botanical flavors and also inspired the drink’s name. Originally, we used lime juice, but because of the current shortage, higher prices and lower quality of limes, we re-designed it with lemon.

Ahoy Ahoy vert
1 plum, pitted and chopped, save a sliver for garnish
1/4 teaspoon Grenadine
1/4 teaspoon lemon juice
1 1/2 ounces “Navy Strength” Genius Gin

Thoroughly crush the plum with the grenadine and lemon juice in a mixing glass. Add gin and several ice cubes. Shake vigorously. Pour through a fine-mesh sieve into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with plum sliver.
