Here’s a tribute to Texas spirit makers on the occasion of this weekend’s 2015 Houston Whiskey Festival. Not all the whiskey poured will be Texican, but we are using one that is — Yellow Rose Double Barrel, a bourbon aged first in new oak and then finished in wine barrels. The two-step aging adds a richer character and flavor to the finished spirit. In our recipe we’ve also used one Texas-sized ice cube in the old-fashioned glass. Gotta keep up those Lone Star traditions.
2 ounces bourbon
1/2 ounce Tuaca
1 ounce Ruby Red grapefruit juice, fresh! (or at least not-from-concentrate)
1 dash Peychaud’s bitters
Pour all the ingredients in a cocktail shaker with several ice cubes. Shake until throughly chilled. Strain over ice into an old-fashioned glass. Garnish with a twist of lemon or grapefruit peel.
Want to know more? Yellow Rose
Tasting notes: Smooth and bright. Tuaca bridges the whiskey and juice.
Next: Best of show
