Red Card, World Cup cocktail

In soccer a red card means “you’re outta here,” the result of a player being cautioned with two yellow cards for an infraction of soccer rules. (See yesterday’s cocktail.) The real sting about a red card is that the player can not be replaced and his team is now one player short.

Red Card Red Card vert
2 ounces light rum
1/2 ounce cranberry juice
1/2 ounce sweet vermouth
2 dashes Angostura bitters

Pour the ingredients into a mixing glass with several ice cubes. Stir evenly for 15 seconds. Strain over ice into an old-fashioned glass. Garnish with a stemmed maraschino cherry.

World Cup television schedules: ABC and ESPN will broadcast in English and Univision will broadcast in Spanish.

Tasting notes: Vermouth and cranberry combine for a pleasantly tart, smokey aftertaste.

Tomorrow: Martini Monday
