Star anise, a spice closely resembling anise in flavor, is obtained from the star-shaped fruit of an Asian evergreen. Commonly used in Asian and Indian cooking, we’ve decided to bring it into the cocktail world and partner it with bourbon.
2 ounces bourbon
1 teaspoon simple syrup
1 orange slice
1 star anise
Chilled soda water
Muddle the syrup, start anise, and orange in an empty cocktail shaker or mixing glass, making sure the start anise is broken into small pieces. Add the bourbon and several ice cubes. Shake thoroughly and strain through a fine mesh sieve over the rocks into an old-fashioned glass. Top with a splash of soda. Stir and garnish with a wedge of orange.
Tasting notes: Soft anise, citrus and smooth bourbon flavors.
Tomorrow: Group A
