While Christopher Columbus is hailed for “discovering America” on his first voyage to the New World in 1492, all he really did was bump into an island or two in the Caribbean. Our “New World” cocktail celebrates Columbus’ landfall with a tart concoction of rum and citrus. We use Flor de Caña Extra Dry, a rum from Nicaragua, because it blends well. The drop of Campari is a bitter nod to Admiral Columbus’ homeland, and part of our Negroni Week celebration.
New World
2 ounces light rum
1 ounce fresh lime juice
1/2 teaspoon Campari
Put a half slice of orange in a stemmed cocktail glass and chill both together in the freezer while making the drink. Place several ice cubes in a cocktail shaker. Add the rum, lime juice and Campari. Shake vigorously, pour into the chilled glass, sip, and welcome to the New World.
Tasting notes: Smooth rum, tart lime, bittersweet Campari play well together.
Tomorrow: Negroni Week continues
