Valencia, brandy cocktail

Valencia, California, was named after the hybridized orange grown there. But we are willing to ignore that and note that oranges are also grown in Valencia, on Spain’s Mediterranean Coast. They also distill very good brandy in Spain: Foundator; Carlos I; and Torres are popular brands. Today’s no-lime cocktail embraces both Valencias.

Valencia Valencia vert
1 1/2 ounces brandy (Spanish, if you can get it)
Juice of one Valencia orange, 3 to 4 ounces
2 dashes Angostura bitters

Put all the ingredients in an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with — what else? — an orange twist.

Tasting notes: The bitters unify the spirit and citrus.

Tomorrow: Okay?
