Gold Medal, Olympian cocktail

The 2014 Winter Olympics get underway today in Sochi, Russian. Immediate thematic ideas for a celebratory drink run to Black Russian, White Russian or the locationally inaccurate Moscow Mule. But something different, something world class, something to fight the cold, snow and ice is needed. Rum? A touch of mint? Let the games begin!

Gold Medal gold medal pour vert
1 ounce dark rum
1 ounce light rum
1/2 teaspoon mint syrup or creme de menthe

Pour all the ingredients in an ice-filled mixing glass. Stir until cold. Strain over ice in an old-fashioned glass. Garnish with an orange twist.

Tasting notes: The slight bit of mint highlights the qualities of the mixed light and dark rum. For casual cocktail drinkers who may have experienced rum only hidden in large goblets of fruit, this will come as a revelation – use good rum.

Tomorrow: Slivovitz?
