As November draws toward its blustery close and we head into another election cycle (saints preserve us), we are reminded about a drink with a political past. Ward 8 hails from Boston, home of so many lovely hard drinking politicians. A Southie barman, when called upon to create a drink celebrating a state legislator’s election, pulled together a warming concoction named after the pol’s home district, Ward 8. Serve this ice cold, notice how it warms you, and think kindly of the red nosed old pol.
Ward 8
1 1/2 ounces rye whiskey
1 teaspoon grenadine
3/4 ounce chilled orange juice
Juice of 1/2 a lemon
A slice of lemon or orange
Place a stemmed cocktail glass in the freezer. Combine the whiskey, grenadine, orange and lemon juices in a Boston shaker with ice. Shake like hell, strain into the chilled cocktail glass and garnish with the citrus slice. Enjoy responsibly, and renew your voter registration.
Tomorrow: A wily Russian monk (reach for the vodka).
