Harvard, quad cocktail

This recipe is more than 100 years old, pretty young when you consider the university lending its name to it was founded in 1636. The club soda topping lightens the richer cognac and vermouth. Don’t confuse this with the cocktail of the same name calling for a pharmaceutical mix of vitamins.

Harvard Harvard top crop
1 1/2 ounces cognac
1 ounce sweet vermouth
2 or 3 dashes Angostura bitters
Chilled club soda

Put all the ingredients — except the soda water — in an ice-filled mixing glass. Stir until thoroughly chilled. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and top off with an ounce or so of cold club soda.
