The 140th Kentucky Derby is run today. The event calls for a long drink, though the race is short at 1 1/4 miles and a running time of just over 2 minutes. This bourbon-based recipe with berry additions and strong mint tones bears only a distant similarity to the classic Mint Julep served at race time. The punch recipe is for 6.
Derby Punch
2 cups raspberries
20 mint leaves
3 ounces simple syrup
12 ounces Kentucky bourbon
3 cups limeade
Juice of 1 lemon
6 dashes orange bitters
In a large pitcher, muddle the raspberries, mint leaves, and syrup. Add bourbon and stir. Add limeade, lemon juice and bitters and stir to combine. To serve, pour into collins glasses packed with crushed ice. Garnish with mint sprigs.
