Texas 71 is a section of state highway connecting the sources of this cocktail: Bone Spirits in Smithville and Rohan Meadery near La Grange. Bone Spirits is a farm-to-bottle operation distilling gin, vodka and two Fitch’s Goat corn whiskeys. One whiskey is a clear Moonshine and we thought it paired well with honey-based mead and a touch of orange bitters. You can, of course, use another moonshine and mead from a different maker — but, son, it wouldn’t be Texas.
Texas 71
2 ounces Bone Spirit Moonshine
2 ounces Rohan Honeymoon Mead
2 dashes orange bitters
Pour all the ingredients in an ice-filled old-fashioned glass. Stir to combine and chill. Garnish with a generous orange slice.
