This Prohibition-era drink might have originated on Long Island but iced tea it is not. Made with five spirits: rum, vodka, gin, tequila, and triple sec. Leave out the triple sec and this is a Texas Iced Tea. Substitute Blue Curacao for the triple sec and you have a Miami Iced Tea. None are made with tea.
Long Island Iced Tea
1/2 ounce light rum
1/2 ounce vodka
1/2 ounce gin
1/2 ounce tequila
1/2 ounce triple sec
1 ounce lime juice
Chilled cola
Pour the ingredients, except the cola, into a highball glass filled with ice. Stir to combine. Top with the chilled cola. Garnish with a wedge of lime and serve with a straw.
Tasting notes: A good sharp freshly-opened cola makes a difference, often masking the potent spirit mix. The lime lifts the pleasant burn of the cola. Enjoy at home or book a taxi service.
Tomorrow: Brazilini.
