Manhattan, perfect cocktail

The Manhattan cocktail has a history seemingly as old as the island itself. The original, called “the perfect Manhattan,” later spawned drier and sweeter versions. It all depended on the types and amounts of vermouth used. This perfect, a fence-sitter using dry and sweet vermouth, celebrates Super Bowl co-hosts on the east side of the Hudson River.

Manhattan Manhatten vert crop
1 1/2 ounces rye whiskey
1/4 ounce sweet vermouth
1/4 ounce dry vermouth
2 dashes Angostura Bitters

Pour all ingredients into an ice-filled mixing glass. Stir until well chilled. Strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a stemmed maraschino cherry.

Tasting notes: A lighter rye whiskey blends well with both vermouths. An approachable classic.

Tomorrow: Crossing the river
