Sidecar, an officer’s transport

The Ritz Hotel in Paris claims founder’s rights for this World War I era drink, a reference, it is claimed, to the common form of transport among junior officers of the French army. With its strong blast of cognac, it has all the war-time hallmarks of a “live for today, tomorrow be damned” drink.

Sidecar sidecar pour copy
1 1/2 ounces Cognac
3/4 ounce Cointreau or triple sec
3/4 ounce fresh lemon juice

Add all ingredients to an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Give it a good shake, you want to drink this cold. Strain over a little chipped ice in a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish the rim with half a lemon slice.

Tomorrow: Let’s get literary.
